City Lights

Voyeuristic photographs of illuminated interiors document the spatio-luminous reality of the city. The lights in the spaces are diverse but static, as are the habits of people who live in them. Each of these private spaces is a personification of their inhabitants, an organism with its own state of consciousness, and together they form the inner organism of the city.

Darkness recedes in front of the hypertrophy of urban light: increasingly powerful reflectors illuminate the public areas of the city and the advertisements within them. Flats whose windows overlook major roads, intersections or squares do not sink into darkness at dusk, but rather the daylight in them is replaced by strong and aggressive lighting from the exterior.

Lamp towards the Lamp, Lamp towards the Mirror, Lamp towards the Photo

2001
a triptych: four ready-made lamps, mirror 40 x 40 cm and a photograph 30 x 30 cm

Lamp towards the Lamp: Two identical lamps are directed towards each other. Both lamps emit light and should illuminate each other, but since their screens are almost leaning against each other, most of the light is trapped in the space between them.
Lamp towards the Mirror: The mirror reflects the image of the lamp pointed at it and thus creates the illusion of the existence of an identical space and another lamp in it. The mirror also diffuses the light of the lamp into the surrounding space. This secondary, false space exists at the same time and is completely dependent on the primary space.
Lamp towards the Photograph: A photograph of a lamp pointed at it is only a flat impression of the visual content recorded at one past moment from one position. The image of the lamp in the photo is visible because it is illuminated by a real lamp, but it does not reflect its light to an extent sufficient to illuminate the surrounding space.

Ambiance

2000
ambiance, metal construction, 80 light bulbs, electronics, red plexiglass
dimensions according to the gallery space (cca 4 x 4 m)

In total darkness, the viewer can perceive only a very slow and noiseless circular movement of a multitude of the luminous dashes just overhead. The lack of a visible static point as a fulcrum leads to a loss of feeling of one’s own staticity, stability and balance.

Filaments drawings

2000
objects, light bulbs, metal construction, black glass, electric motors, electronic parts
5 x (50 x 50 x 50 cm), 5 x (25 x 25 x 25 cm)

Tinted glass minimizes the primary purpose of incandescent light bulbs – emission of light, allowing observation of their incandescent filaments as kinetic drawings. Further dimming of the light intensity diminishes the visibility of some parts of the drawing until they fade out and disappear completely, only to reappear elsewhere. Fast movement merges glowing lines into unique traces of movement.
